Our natural satellite is gradually moving away from the planet and we have been able to see this since 1969, when NASA installed reflective panels on the lunar surface during the Apollo missions. Since then, laser beams have been launched from Earth, which have made it possible to determine precisely the annual rate at which the Moon is moving away from us.

"The moon's retreat from our planet is imperceptible to the human eye."

The first scientist to notice this peculiarity was Edmond Halley almost 300 years ago, who, after studying the records of ancient eclipses, was able to reach this conclusion. This receding is thought to be due to tidal friction in the oceans, which influences the Earth's rotational speed: by slowing it down, the resulting loss of angular momentum is compensated for in the acceleration of the Moon, causing it to move further and further away.

It has now been shown that the Moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of about 3.8 cm per year. Researchers at the University of Utrecht and the University of Geneva have implemented various methods to determine the Moon's past. The Moon's retreat has been studied several times: in addition to the various theories, there are some new developments. The recent signals were found in ancient rock layers on Earth.

In Western Australia, scientists have found geological evidence 2.5 billion years old. In the sediment layers of Karijini National Park, once deposited on the ocean floor and now found in the Earth's crust, regular intervals of rocks of different thicknesses and shades are identified. These variations in rock patterns may be related to "Milankovitch cycles".

In addition to affecting the Earth's climate over long periods of time, the Milankovitch cycles influence the Moon's distancing, specifically through the climate precession cycle. The Earth's precessional motion, or change of orientation of the Earth's spin axis, has been altered over time. It currently has a 21,000-year cycle, but this period would have been shorter in the past when the Moon was closer to the Earth, the study details.

Firstly, as the Earth's rotational speed decreases, days on Earth will become longer and longer. For another, winters will be much colder and summers much hotter. And due to the reduced gravitational influence of the Moon on the planet, tides would no longer be as strong. Even so, they will still exist, albeit slightly, due to the effect of the Sun.

One thing is certain: we need not worry about its absence, because it will never escape the pull of the Earth. At a certain point, the Moon and the Earth will reach an equilibrium and the Moon will stop moving away.

Photo AFP

Source : ennaharonline.com
Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475319340256315943.post-47613340128761398912023-02-19T16:42:00.003+01:002023-02-19T16:47:21.685+01:00 Scientists Believe They Have Just Discovered A Parallel Universe

GETTY

Scientists believe they may have caught a glimpse of a parallel universe bumping up against ours.

They've seen hints in signals from the most distant points of the universe that suggest the fabric of our universe has been disrupted by another incredibly different universe. In Antakya, in southern Turkey, it took only 80 seconds for the twelve-story tower and its 250 apartments to collapse, unable to resist the violence of the earthquake that struck the country on Monday at dawn. Out of the thousand residents who lived there, only a few tens of names appear on a short list of survivors, hanging at the entrance of the residence, named by a sad coincidence "Rönesans" (Renaissance). "My friend was inside, I'm looking for his name. I don't see it," says a young man, eyes fixed on the pages, in the 20H news of TF1.

The residents were buried in the building's collapse. Among them is Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, who has not yet been found according to his loved ones, or Mustafa's parents, who are still under the rubble. Yet, the couple had made this housing the investment of their life. "It's just a cemetery now. I'm angry, but I don't know who to blame," sighs their son, with a blank gaze. Behind him, a bulldozer is active amidst the debris. "They chose this residence because it was supposed to be solid and resist earthquakes," explains his cousin Hasan. "That's what they were told, but unfortunately, it wasn't true."

The residence, which promised high-end services, with a pool and private parking, was completed only ten years ago, in 2013. In the neighborhood where it was located, hundreds of similar ten-story and above buildings are also located, but almost all are still standing after the earthquake. "Rönesans" is one of the few to have collapsed.

"The ground shouldn't have given way like that"

"Turkey follows seismic codes in theory with a high level," explained Boris Weliachew, architect and major risk specialist, on LCI on Friday. Ankara has adopted a series of standards and regulations that are regularly revised, but new buildings may present "poor implementation," said the expert. According to engineers and architects, builders are able to bypass the rules by entrusting the controls to private companies, with whom they negotiate a friendly agreement that can give them a great deal of latitude.

Suspected of not respecting the seismic construction laws of the region, the real estate promoter of the site, Mehmet Yasar Coskun, was arrested at Istanbul airport as he tried to flee the country. Some of these regions include:

* The West Coast of the United States, particularly California: this region is on the edge of the Pacific Plate tectonic plate and is seismically active.

* Japan: Japan is on the Pacific Plate tectonic fault line and is exposed to many significant earthquakes and tsunamis.

* The Andes Mountain range in South America: the formation of these mountains is due to the collision of tectonic plates, making the region subject to seismic activity.

* The Himalayan Alps: the Himalaya is forming due to the collision between the Indian and Asian tectonic plates, which can result in significant seismic activity in the region.

* The Middle East: this region is on the Red Sea fault, which is a collision zone between the African and Arabian tectonic plates, resulting in high seismic activity.

Ultimately, it is important to prepare for an earthquake by knowing the proper safety practices and having an emergency plan in place, no matter where you are.

Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475319340256315943.post-16772391335341559062023-02-12T20:13:00.000+01:002023-02-12T20:13:18.796+01:00The hollow moon theory
This theory was first proposed in the 1950s and 1960s by Russian scientists who suggested that the Moon might be empty inside. The aircraft will also be used as a supersonic business jet that can link any two points on Earth, reports Space.com. The company said that a flight from Beijing to New York would only take an hour.

A CGI presentation on Space Transportation’s website shows passengers boarding a plane that is attached to a glider wing with two rocket boosters. The airplane then detaches from the wing after takeoff and flies through suborbital space. The wing and boosters then land back on the launch pad, while the aircraft proceeds to its destination, landing vertically.

A spokesperson told Chinese media that the winged rocket will have lower operational costs than “rockets carrying satellites and be faster than a traditional aircraft.” SpaceX introduced a similar concept in 2017 called “Earth to Earth,” which had been repurposed from its “BFR,” originally conceived to transport passengers to Mars. Earth to Earth was designed as city-to-city passenger transport using Starship rockets. The company hasn’t released any details about the concept since then.

Virgin Galactic last summer launched CEO Sir Richard Branson on an 11-minute suborbital flight, officially introducing the space-tourism industry to the general public. A Virgin Galactic executive told Robb Report that space tourism would be the company’s initial focus, but he also foresaw a time when the fixed-wing aircraft would serve as a supersonic commuter.

Space Transportation said last August it had raised $46.3 million for its supersonic space plane, which it claims will travel at about 2,600 mph. The company also said it had recently conducted successful test flights on rockets, called Tianxing 1 and Tianxing 2, but it did not provide information about the tests.

Space Transportation plans to conduct ground tests by 2023 before carrying out its first test flight in 2024. If development proceeds on track, it would have a crewed test flight in 2025.

Source : robbreport.com
Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475319340256315943.post-73059839371263683562022-02-02T17:05:00.003+01:002022-02-02T17:05:28.417+01:00Chinese scientists build robot nanny to look after babies in artificial womb

Parents of the future rejoice! Scientists in China have developed an AI nanny that they say could one day take care of human fetuses in a lab.

Researchers in Suzhou, China, claim to have created a system that can monitor and care for embryos as they grow into fetuses while growing inside an artificial womb, The South China Morning Post reports.

The robotic nanny is already reportedly caring for a number of animal embryos. Experimentation on human embryos, however, is still forbidden under international law, as the newspaper points out.

The team published their findings in the Journal of Biomedical Engineering last month. In the paper, they detail an “online monitoring system” designed for the “long-term culture of embryos.”

The system could theoretically allow parents to grow a baby in a lab, thereby eliminating the need for a human to carry a child. The researchers go as far as to say that this system would be safer than traditional childbearing.

Beyond those claims, though, it remains unclear whether the system could actually bring an embryo, mouse or otherwise, to term.

As it exists right now, the artificial womb is a container that grows a number of mouse embryos in a row of cubes filled with nutritious fluids, according to the paper.

The AI nanny is reportedly able to monitor the embryos, detect changes, and adjust their artificial environment accordingly. It can even alert a technician in case an embryo develops a defect or dies.

The technology is still very much in its nascent stages, but a looming population crisis in China is only serving to accelerate its development.

Read more on futurism.com
Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475319340256315943.post-66978093211486047072022-02-01T15:27:00.001+01:002022-02-01T15:27:30.286+01:00Iraqi kills his transgender brother in a hideous way

homeland – Iraqi media circulated details of a shocking crime, where an Iraqi young man in Dohuk governorate killed his transgender brother, from male to female, by shooting him and throwing his body.

According to what the “rudaw” website mentioned regarding the details of the crime, the Dohuk Police Directorate announced the killing of a 23-year-old transgender youth at the hands of his brother, pointing out that the killer resides outside the Kurdistan Region.

The director of the “Mankeesh” district said that a body was found near the village of “Babukhki” in the sub-district, Dohuk governorate.

The murdered young man, according to the account of the district director, Brendar Dosky, was recently promoting his transformation from a boy to a girl through social networks.

He continued, explaining to Rudaw Network: “That is why his brother killed him.”

However, Dosky also stressed that this is preliminary information and needs detailed investigation, he said.

It was the family of the murdered young man, called (D.A), who reported to the police, today, that she had killed her son. For the brain, this is no easy feat. On the one hand, the visual world alters continuously because of changes in light, viewpoint and other factors. On the other, our visual input constantly changes due to blinking and the fact that our eyes, head and body are frequently in motion.

To get an idea of the “noisiness” of this visual input, place a phone in front of your eyes and record a live video while you are walking around and looking at different things. The jittery, messy result is exactly what your brain deals with in every moment of your visual experience. This can be seen also in the video below. The white circle on the right shows potential eye movements, and the blurry blob on the left reveals the jumpy visual input in every moment.

Yet, seeing never feels like work for us. Rather than perceiving the fluctuations and visual noise that a video might record, we perceive a consistently stable environment. So how does our brain create this illusion of stability? This process has fascinated scientists for centuries and it is one of the fundamental questions in vision science.

The time machine brain

In our latest research, we discovered a new mechanism that, among others, can explain this illusory stability. The brain automatically smoothes our visual input over time. Instead of analysing every single visual snapshot, we perceive in a given moment an average of what we saw in the past 15 seconds. So, by pulling together objects to appear more similar to each other, our brain tricks us into perceiving a stable environment. Living “in the past” can explain why we do not notice subtle changes that occur over time.

In other words, the brain is like a time machine which keeps sending us back in time. It’s like an app that consolidates our visual input every 15 seconds into one impression so that we can handle everyday life. If our brains were always updating in real time, the world would feel like a chaotic place with constant fluctuations in light, shadow and movement. We would feel like we were hallucinating all the time.

We created an illusion to illustrate how this stabilisation mechanism works. Looking at the video below, the face on the left side slowly ages for 30 seconds, and yet, it is very difficult to notice the full extent of the change in age. In fact, observers perceive the face as ageing more slowly than it actually is.

To test this illusion we recruited hundreds of participants and asked them to view close-ups of faces morphing chronologically in age in 30-second timelapse videos. When asked to tell the age of the face at the very end of the video, the participants almost consistently reported the age of the face that was presented 15 seconds before.

As we watch the video, we are continuously biased towards the past and so the brain constantly sends us back to the previous ten to 15 seconds (where the face was younger). Instead of seeing the latest image in real time, humans actually see earlier versions because our brain’s refresh time is about 15 seconds. In those moments, it became the brightest source of radio waves viewable from Earth, acting like a celestial lighthouse.

Astronomers think it might be a remnant of a collapsed star, either a dense neutron star or a dead white dwarf star, with a strong magnetic field -- or it could be something else entirely.

A study on the discovery published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

"This object was appearing and disappearing over a few hours during our observations," said lead study author Natasha Hurley-Walker, an astrophysicist at the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, in a statement.

"That was completely unexpected. It was kind of spooky for an astronomer because there's nothing known in the sky that does that. And it's really quite close to us -- about 4,000 light-years away. It's in our galactic backyard."

Curtin University doctoral student Tyrone O'Doherty made the unusual discovery while using the Murchison Widefield Array telescope in the outback of Western Australia.

"It's exciting that the source I identified last year has turned out to be such a peculiar object," O'Doherty said in a statement. "The MWA's wide field of view and extreme sensitivity are perfect for surveying the entire sky and detecting the unexpected."

"When studying transients, you're watching the death of a massive star or the activity of the remnants it leaves behind," said study coauthor Gemma Anderson, ICRAR-Curtin astrophysicist, in a statement. "'Slow transients' -- like supernovae -- might appear over the course of a few days and disappear after a few months. 'Fast transients' -- like a type of neutron star called a pulsar -- flash on and off within milliseconds or seconds."

This new, incredibly bright object, however, only turned on for about a minute every 18 minutes. The researchers said their observations might match up with the definition of an ultra-long period magnetar. Magnetars usually flare by the second, but this object takes longer.

Read more on cnn.com

Source : slate.fr
Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475319340256315943.post-61358740415387474242022-01-31T10:58:00.001+01:002022-01-31T10:58:54.224+01:0084-year-old man was driving without a license for 72 years

It turns out you can outrun the law, but only for 72 years.

Police pulled over an 84-year-old driver in Bulwell, U.K., this week only to discover he didn’t have a valid license … ever.

The retired man, who police said had trouble standing and hearing, admitted that he’d been driving without a license or insurance since he was 12 years old, SWNS reported.

"Thankfully he had never had an accident, caused anyone an injury, and never made anyone lose out financially, by hitting them whilst uninsured!"

Police did not release the man’s name or what penalties he was issued, but said his blue MINI had been spotted by a traffic camera that’s part of an expanding network, which identified it as being operated without proper documents.

Source : foxnews.com
Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475319340256315943.post-44241249486324922872022-01-26T11:04:00.005+01:002022-01-28T10:09:49.096+01:00Fight Club gets a new ending in China, and the authorities win

A new version of the movie available to Chinese audiences transforms the anarchist message of the original

At the end of David Fincher’s 1999 cult classic Fight Club, Edward Norton’s character the narrator kills off his imaginary alter ego Tyler Durden – played by Brad Pitt – and then watches as multiple buildings explode.

The imagery cuts to the heart of the film’s message: a plan to bring down modern civilisation is under way.

Over 20 years on, this anarchist and anti-capitalist message has been given a new makeover – with Chinese characteristics.

In the version newly available on streaming platform Tencent Video, the narrator still kills off Durden, but the exploding building scene is replaced with a black screen and a coda: “The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding.”

It adds that Tyler – a figment of the narrator’s imagination – was sent to a “lunatic asylum” for psychological treatment and was later discharged.

The change was noticed over the weekend by fans in China, where the American film is now available through streaming platform Tencent Video. It immediately confused viewers who had seen the original version who took to the internet to complain about it.

“This is too outrageous,” one commented on Tencent Video. “Fight Club on Tencent Video tells us that they don’t just delete scenes, but add to the plot too,” one user complained on China’s social media platform, Weibo. “I’d rather see Tencent pull this film. What you are propagating here is not ‘positive energy’. What are you trying to achieve by changing the ending?” remarked another disappointed viewer on Douban.

It is not clear whether government censors had ordered the alternative ending or if the original movie’s producers made the changes on their own. Tencent did not comment on the matter.

Censorship is not a new practice in China, and cultural products are often used as tools to promote societal values. The extent of the content moderation – in particular when it comes to foreign imports – can sometimes be severe.

“The new Chinese version of Fight Club puts power back into the hands of the police and implies an ideal closure in line with the Chinese state discourse in which the symbiotic relationship between the police and the state is a given,” said Dr How Wee Ng, who teaches Chinese film and media at the University of Westminster.

“This treatment is commonplace in many Chinese television dramas and films which represent crime and violence,” he added. “Ironically, the force with which censorship is imposed stems from a Chinese historical fear of social instability and the presupposition of threat to the status quo.”

Campaigns to cultivate an ideal relationship between culture, the market and the population have been ongoing in China for a number of years. Last December, China’s president, Xi Jinping, urged Chinese artists to strengthen their cultural confidence and contribute to a “socialist cultural power”.

And on Tuesday, the Cyberspace Administration of China announced it was launching a month-long “clean” web campaign to create a “civilised and healthy” atmosphere online over the lunar new year holiday.

Such an effort has had a profound impact on how western producers and distributors behave in China’s gigantic consumer market over the years. Hollywood studios, for example, often release alternative cuts in the hopes of clearing Beijing’s censorship hurdles and gaining access to millions of Chinese viewers.

In 2019, multiple scenes in the film Bohemian Rhapsody referencing iconic musician Freddie Mercury’s sexuality – a pivotal part of his biography – were dropped in its China release.

Mc Darkyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17720141087215004777noreply@blogger.com0
