Bird Appears Suspended in Sky : a glitch in the matrix ?

A family was left puzzled after witnessing a crow seemingly frozen in mid-air during the school run.

Mom Kayleen Bowman shared the strange video on Facebook which appeared to show a black crow suspended in the sky near some overhead wires in Gallump, New Mexico, USA.

Throughout the entire 15-second clip, the object that bears a startling resemblance to a bird does not seem to move an inch.

Kayleen wrote in the caption on Saturday: "The other morning Jay was taking Lilly to school.

"Lilly said, 'Look that bird is frozen!' Jay stopped the car to see what she meant.

"They saw this crow 'frozen' in the sky. It looks like it was in the middle of flapping its wings."

Chinese scientists build robot nanny to look after babies in artificial womb

Parents of the future rejoice! Scientists in China have developed an AI nanny that they say could one day take care of human fetuses in a lab.

Researchers in Suzhou, China, claim to have created a system that can monitor and care for embryos as they grow into fetuses while growing inside an artificial womb, The South China Morning Post reports.

The robotic nanny is already reportedly caring for a number of animal embryos. Experimentation on human embryos, however, is still forbidden under international law, as the newspaper points out.

The team published their findings in the Journal of Biomedical Engineering last month. In the paper, they detail an “online monitoring system” designed for the “long-term culture of embryos.”

The system could theoretically allow parents to grow a baby in a lab, thereby eliminating the need for a human to carry a child. The researchers go as far as to say that this system would be safer than traditional childbearing.

Beyond those claims, though, it remains unclear whether the system could actually bring an embryo, mouse or otherwise, to term.

As it exists right now, the artificial womb is a container that grows a number of mouse embryos in a row of cubes filled with nutritious fluids, according to the paper.

The AI nanny is reportedly able to monitor the embryos, detect changes, and adjust their artificial environment accordingly. It can even alert a technician in case an embryo develops a defect or dies.

The technology is still very much in its nascent stages, but a looming population crisis in China is only serving to accelerate its development.

Chicago: Man who spent 20 years in jail released after twin confesses to murder

An American man who spent nearly two decades in jail for a 2003 murder has been released years after his identical twin confessed to the crime.

Kevin Dugar was convicted in 2005 over a deadly gang-related shooting and was sentenced to 54 years in prison.

A gunman had opened fire on three people in Chicago's Uptown area, killing Antwan Carter and wounding Ronnie Bolden, according to NBC Chicago.

Mr Dugar has long maintained his innocence, refusing a plea deal that would have reduced his jail term to 11 years.

Twin writes confessional letter

His fate appeared to be sealed until his twin brother, Karl Smith, wrote him a letter in 2013 admitting he had carried out the murder.

The siblings had dressed alike until the eighth grade and had impersonated each other for years, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Their last names are different because Smith took his mother's maiden name.

Initially, the admission had little impact on Mr Dugar's case, with a judge ruling in 2018 that Smith's confession was not credible, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Prosecutors said Smith had nothing to lose by speaking up for his brother because he was already serving out a 99-year prison sentence for a home invasion that saw a child shot in the head, which he could not appeal.

A lawyer with the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law's Center on Wrongful Convictions took Mr Dugar's case back to court, however, and the Illinois Court of Appeals overturned that decision in 2021 - a move that eventually led to his release...

84-year-old man was driving without a license for 72 years

It turns out you can outrun the law, but only for 72 years.

Police pulled over an 84-year-old driver in Bulwell, U.K., this week only to discover he didn’t have a valid license … ever.

The retired man, who police said had trouble standing and hearing, admitted that he’d been driving without a license or insurance since he was 12 years old, SWNS reported.

"Thankfully he had never had an accident, caused anyone an injury, and never made anyone lose out financially, by hitting them whilst uninsured!"

Police did not release the man’s name or what penalties he was issued, but said his blue MINI had been spotted by a traffic camera that’s part of an expanding network, which identified it as being operated without proper documents.

Fight Club gets a new ending in China, and the authorities win

A new version of the movie available to Chinese audiences transforms the anarchist message of the original

At the end of David Fincher’s 1999 cult classic Fight Club, Edward Norton’s character the narrator kills off his imaginary alter ego Tyler Durden – played by Brad Pitt – and then watches as multiple buildings explode.

The imagery cuts to the heart of the film’s message: a plan to bring down modern civilisation is under way.

Over 20 years on, this anarchist and anti-capitalist message has been given a new makeover – with Chinese characteristics.

In the version newly available on streaming platform Tencent Video, the narrator still kills off Durden, but the exploding building scene is replaced with a black screen and a coda: “The police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding.”

It adds that Tyler – a figment of the narrator’s imagination – was sent to a “lunatic asylum” for psychological treatment and was later discharged.

The change was noticed over the weekend by fans in China, where the American film is now available through streaming platform Tencent Video. It immediately confused viewers who had seen the original version who took to the internet to complain about it.

“This is too outrageous,” one commented on Tencent Video. “Fight Club on Tencent Video tells us that they don’t just delete scenes, but add to the plot too,” one user complained on China’s social media platform, Weibo. “I’d rather see Tencent pull this film. What you are propagating here is not ‘positive energy’. What are you trying to achieve by changing the ending?” remarked another disappointed viewer on Douban.

It is not clear whether government censors had ordered the alternative ending or if the original movie’s producers made the changes on their own. Tencent did not comment on the matter.

Censorship is not a new practice in China, and cultural products are often used as tools to promote societal values. The extent of the content moderation – in particular when it comes to foreign imports – can sometimes be severe.

“The new Chinese version of Fight Club puts power back into the hands of the police and implies an ideal closure in line with the Chinese state discourse in which the symbiotic relationship between the police and the state is a given,” said Dr How Wee Ng, who teaches Chinese film and media at the University of Westminster.

“This treatment is commonplace in many Chinese television dramas and films which represent crime and violence,” he added. “Ironically, the force with which censorship is imposed stems from a Chinese historical fear of social instability and the presupposition of threat to the status quo.”

Campaigns to cultivate an ideal relationship between culture, the market and the population have been ongoing in China for a number of years. Last December, China’s president, Xi Jinping, urged Chinese artists to strengthen their cultural confidence and contribute to a “socialist cultural power”.

And on Tuesday, the Cyberspace Administration of China announced it was launching a month-long “clean” web campaign to create a “civilised and healthy” atmosphere online over the lunar new year holiday.

Such an effort has had a profound impact on how western producers and distributors behave in China’s gigantic consumer market over the years. Hollywood studios, for example, often release alternative cuts in the hopes of clearing Beijing’s censorship hurdles and gaining access to millions of Chinese viewers.

In 2019, multiple scenes in the film Bohemian Rhapsody referencing iconic musician Freddie Mercury’s sexuality – a pivotal part of his biography – were dropped in its China release.

Galloping Crocodiles Ate Dinosaurs In North Africa

The Cretaceous era was a truly terrifying place, with galloping crocodiles capable of giving the better-known dinosaurs a run for their money. A documentary on the giant crocodiles of the era will screen on December 20th.

In 2009, National Geographic expeditions to Morocco and Niger revealed three new species of 100-million-year-old crocodiles, formally described in Zookeys.

The first specimen unearthed of Kaprosuchus saharicus would have been 6.5-meters-long (21 feet). Combined with three sets of sharp tusks and a snout that could probably have been used as a sort of battering ram, this must have been the stuff of nightmares for the beasts of the time. While it is thought that K. saharicus fed mainly on dinosaurs, our ancestral mammals probably had plenty of reason to be afraid.
